Ida

Excellent book. Kindle Amazing lady. How she chose Christ (although she did not intend too) then gave 100%. If I could do that I would be a better person. Shows how one life can move mountains. This lady changed the part of India she served. And showed that women can be equal to men, in a time in history that was male dominated. Indeed, showed how women actually surpassed men. Nope. I’m not feminist. All are equal. But read it. And you will see why I say this. Men scoffed and laughted that her girls going for doctor certification would pass. Truly believing they had less brain power and intelligence. They came top. Over every group of men applying. And not just by a small amount. By a superlative mount. God made male and female equal. This book clearly shows He uses all. As a young girl, the daughter of missionaries, Ida had seen how bad things were in India in the 1800's. Her heart was so touched that she decided she couldn't face it and would never live in India again. However, God had plans to use her sensitive heart and got her back to India to help her very sick mother. Whilst there, Ida was begged by 3 men one night to help their wives in difficult childbirth. As a school leaver, she was helpless. The following morning she learned that all 3 women had died for the want of a woman doctor. That was enough for Ida, who resolved to become a doctor and return to help. However, it was 3 years before she could leave India, and another 4 years of training in USA.
On her return to India as a doctor, Ida was carrying sufficient donated funds from one dear man to build and equip Vellore's first hospital, where she treated 12,000 patients and carried out 484 operations in her first year. She also began to receive orphans, and in 1923 had 23!
Ida was a pioneer. She opened the hospital, took medical care to villages, opened a nursing school and a medical school for women where she taught, and their 100% pass rate had never been reached before.
The Great Depression and WW2 caused financial challenges, yet Ida needed to expand to preserve the work in accordance with new Governmental directives.
She kept working full time until her retirement, aged 75, but was still involved with the expanding work.
Ida left this world quite quickly when aged 89, leaving behind a legacy of a world renowned hospital and medical school, even to present times, and world breakthroughs in leprosy and on location eye treatments.
An Indian Superintendent of the hospital spoke of Ida at her funeral: Dr. Scudder has achieved the impossible through her close touch with the invisible God, through her faith.
A really lovely and inspiring life and testimony of giving and devotion. This was inspiring, and also realistic in describing her life. My granddaughter is thinking she might like to be a medical missionary. I feel this doesn't varnish the truth, yet shows the profound effect that such a life can have. Janet Benge, Geoff Benge Love this series and never tire of it. Great for church libraries. We read them over and over again at our house. Janet Benge, Geoff Benge

A beautiful example of God's love and
surrendering oneself completely to God's will. Janet Benge, Geoff Benge I love this book because it shows how strong women can be.I️ hope you love this book also.I️ totally recommend this book to everyone women and men. Ida Scudder: Healing Bodies, Touching Hearts (Christian Heroes: Then Now) I enjoyed this book because it was easy to read and packed with information. I enjoy reading about Christian missionaries and Ida was a super hero missionary. English I bought this planning to send it bit by bit to our Compassion child in India who wants to be a doctor. However, after reading it I decided that it might seem demeaning to her Indian heritage because of some of the language. Interesting how things strike us when we are reading from a certain perspective. As an American I would never have a problem giving it to a child to read here and it has been a good experience for me. There is nothing wrong with the book and I enjoyed it and loved this series for our church library. I bought all of them and encouraged their check out. Biographies were a favorite genre of mine growing up and I think they are of great value for all ages. It's rare to find them written for children from a Christian worldview. These are valuable. lebanon We have read several of the Christian Heroes books and Ida Scudder is my favorite. I admire her very much. You learn that she didn't want anything to do with being a missionary as she had seen so much heartache when she was a child with her parents in India. But three tragic births in one night was all it took for God to get Ida's attention and show her the need for female doctors in India. Ida loved the Indian people and served them til her death. You will be inspired by her loyalty. A wonderful book to own and read over and over. lebanon

Written for ages 10 and up enjoyed by adults!

Ida Scudder was sure she would never follow in the footsteps of her medical missionary father. But when she witnessed Indian women dying because their religious beliefs didn't allow male doctors to treat them, Ida heard herself pray, God, if You want me to, I will spend the rest of my life in India trying to help these women.

Serving for nearly sixty years, Dr. Ida Scudder lived out the truth and compassion found in Christ. She pioneered a first rate medical school and hospital, brought life saving health care to rural people, and left an inspiring legacy that still touches missions of people each year with healing and hope.
