This book is great for an introduction into the law of armed conflict also known as international humanitarian law It discusses from an academic and barely biased perspective the wide range of issues that arise in starting and conducting war It was published in 2010 and therefore is able to thoroughly discuss issues surrounding the American wars in Afghanistan Ira and the War on Terror It also provides a good history of the development of the law of armed conflict up to present day The book is well researched and has great footnotes making it a fantastic springboard to deeper research into the issue I heartily recommend it Solis I love this book Solis makes the history and cases of Laws of Armed Conflict a lot easier to understand For those of us involved in uestions regarding the Law of War this book is an essential guide It is at least a starting point and for many uestions the end point also I use if freuently I am a lawyer who defends persons accused of violations of International Humanitarian Law; or of war crimes I highly recommend it I had the privilege of learning under Mr Solis while studying abroad in The Hague Netherlands I loved everything about his class This book was like getting to sit through it one time Professor Solis presents the Law of Armed Conflict clearly and effectively His years of experience on the battlefield and in the classroom have made him an incredible communicator and educator I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning about International Humanitarian Law If you wish to understand the weird world of international law that applies to conduct in armed conflict buy this book It gives great introduction to the evolution of law' and rules note the difference here that presumably govern armed conflict in the contemporary world The author was a military officer and an instructor at the army academy at West Point who developed the laws of war program If you wish a uick read avoid this book BUT if you wish to understand the rules under which US troop operate in contemporary war zones it is an essential read It is well written for a book on law and does explain principles in simple language
